The breaking of a couple of joists in the grand stand at Sportsman's Park a week or two ago, mention of which has been made in the daily press, has caused President Von der Ahe to have the grand stand thoroughly overhauled. Since the repairs have been made the commissioner of buildings has gone over the stand from A to Z and he has issued the following certificate:
Office of Commissioner of Public Buildings.
City Hall, St. Louis, April 20, 1887.
To whom it may concern: - I have this day made a thorough examination of the grand stand, platforms, seats and sheds at the Sportsmans Park, on Grand avenue, between St. Louis and Sullivan avenues, and take pleasure in saying that they are all in good condition and perfectly safe. [Signed,] S. Kledus, Commissioner of Public Buildings.
-Sporting Life, May 4, 1887
So the ballpark was in good condition and perfectly safe. That's good to know.
