Basically, all I want to do today is fill you in on what the plan is regarding my epic 73-part history of the 1873-1876 Red Stockings of St. Louis. Wait. Is this thing really going to be a 73-part history? The honest answer is that I really have no idea.
But here's the plan (such as it is): tomorrow, I'm going to put up the introduction to the piece. Monday, I'll put up the first part. After that, the plan goes to hell.
Right now, I have no idea how long the thing is and that's the major problem. I know I have over a hundred pages of rather detailed notes and that leads me to believe the thing is going to be long. Very long. And I like how I'm now just referring to it as The Thing. John Carpenter's The Thing is pretty much my favorite movie (that or The Big Sleep - depends on my mood). The Thing From Another World is really good too (I'm a sucker for early sci-fi aesthetic; check out Invasion of Astro-Monster for an idea of what I'm talking about). The prequel is ok but they should have used practical effects. And, yeah, I'm just killing time and avoiding having to make any decisions about The Thing.
I've only really just started writing and that's why I don't have a firm grasp of the length of the piece or how I want to post it. Basically, I have a couple of options. If each part isn't really, horrible long, I can post each part one by one. If, however, each part is really, horrible long (say 20+ pages each) then it would probably be best to break each individual section up and post it that way.
As far as scheduling, it all depends. If I'm breaking each part up, I may post a little chunk each day. Or I might just post a huge, unified piece of The Thing once a week. If I'm doing that, that's all I'm going to be posting because my entire focus right now is on writing this thing. So what I do know for sure is that from now until I'm done, all you're getting is the Reds.
And I'm okay with that. I want to get this written and I may have some plans for it once it's done (we'll see about that). Also, I've been saying that I've been wanting to write more long form pieces and it ain't going to get much longer than this. This is a big project and I kind of like the idea of doing nothing but running The Thing in serial installments. Take everything else off the plate and focus on this.
The other problem is that I've had some time off work this week which enabled me to get on top of The Thing. But I'm back to work after the holiday and I'm not sure how quickly I'll be able to finish this. I have a writing schedule that I'm trying to keep to but I'm not the most disciplined of writers. So it's possible that I may not be able to bang this out on the schedule that I'd like - a schedule that would allow me to post regularly (even if it's just one huge chunk per week). But given enough coffee, all things are possible.
The bottom line is that I really have no idea, at this moment, what's going to happen after Monday. However, by the weekend, I'm going to have a much better handle on the situation and a better idea on how to go about posting everything. All I really know is that I promised an epic, comprehensive history of the 1873-1876 Red Stockings of St. Louis and that's what I'm going to give you. Come hell or high water, it's happening.
