Here, at long last, is the box score of the game in which George Paynter was injured by a pitch thrown by Win Kellum. I've written a bit about Paynter's cup of coffee with the Browns but the injuries he sustained in this game is really the more interesting part of his story. It took a long time to find this box score and if it wasn't for the effort of Jerry Paner, we may never have gotten to see this.
I have to offer my congratulations to Jerry and the others who were hunting around for information on George Paynter because without them, this is a story which probably never would have come to light. And thanks again to Jerry for involving me in the effort and passing along all the information that he found.
George Paynter's story is one of the most interesting ones that I've come across in my years of researching 19th century baseball and I'm looking forward to writing up a long piece about his life and baseball career.
